IS MARRIAGE DEFENSIBLE?

Authentic marriage is like a ripe, fresh home-grown tomato, picked from a real vine that you tended and cared for, watered and weeded, and sacrificed for.  There's nothing like savoring the taste of a few wedges with a drop of olive oil and a pinch of salt, maybe a sprinkling of pepper and a splash of balsamaic vinegar.  The taste is real. It has heart.  It's not a genetically modified mass-produced hard red tasteless ball sprayed with ethylene gas to make it look ripe; might as well eat a chunk of plastic.  So it goes with marriage and what some call "gay marriage." Fr. Joseph Illo was born in the Bronx, New York, on December 4, 1961. He received a B.A. inEnglish Literature from the Pennsylvania State University in 1983, and then worked 18 months at Ignatius Press in San Francisco. In 1985 he took courses in Latin, theology, and scripture at Blackfriars, Oxford (England); and then continued at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome (the Angelicum), completing a B.A. in Philosophy in 1987.

He entered St. Joseph’s Seminary in 1987, earning M.Div. and M.A. degrees in theology in 1991, when he was ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood for service in the Diocese of Stockton, California. He served as associate pastor in three parishes over six years, then three years as diocesan vocations director, then twelve years as pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Modesto, CA. In 2012 he began a three-year assignment as chaplain at Thomas Aquinas College, Santa Paula, CA, becoming head chaplain in 2013.

He works with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity locally and throughout the world, preaching retreats and teaching catechetical seminars. He serves on the Executive Board of the California Association of Natural Family Planning, which provides seminars to priests and seminarians throughout California.
He enjoys all outdoor sports, especially backpacking, skiing, cycling, kayaking, and snow camping. He has traveled in Eastern and Western Europe, Latin and South America, and Asia, and is fluent in Spanish and Italian with a knowledge of French, Latin, and German.
