Junipero Serra On Trial: Criminal or Saint?

Patrick Laurence, Esq.

The canonization of California's first saint has been dogged by controversy.  While some contend that Serra lived a life marked by the exercise of heroic virtue, others contend that Serra enslaved, and committed genocide against, the natives of California. The differing views can hardly be more opposed: either he is a criminal, or he is a saint.

What does the evidence show?

Patrick Laurence is an attorney with the law firm of
Murtaugh, Meyer, Nelson & Treglia LLP in Irvine,
California. A native of southern California, he is an author and lecturer on the topic of Serra's relationship with the local indigenous people. He received his undergraduate degree from Thomas Aquinas College in California and his law degree from Ave Maria School of Law in Michigan.  Following law school, Patrick served in a one-year judicial clerkship with the Honorable James L. Ryan of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He currently serves as Chairman of the Thomas Aquinas College Orange County Board
of Regents.
